  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster 16 ASP.
  23.  
  24.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  25.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette
  26.    labeled

  49. III. Installing the drivers
  50. ---------------------------
  51.  
  52.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  53.  
  54.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  55.  
  56.    3. You should have the following driver names in the Installed Drivers
  57.       list:
  58.  
  59.             MIDI Mapper
  60.             Timer
  61.             [MCI] CD Audio
  62.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  63.             [MCI] Sound
  64.  
  65.       If you have other drivers installed, please remove them with the
  66.       REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.  If any of these
  67.       drivers are not listed, please add them before continuing.  (See your
  68.       Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)  Make sure you
  69.       restart Windows after making changes to the driver list.
  70.  
  71.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  72.  
  73.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  74.  
  75.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  76.  
  77.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  78.  
  79.    8. Select Creative Sound Blaster Auxiliary Audio and click on OK.
  80.  
  81.    9. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  82.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  83.       240H, 260H, or 280H, then select the one you changed.
  84.  
  85.   10. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  86.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  87.  
  88.   WARNING! - Steps 11 and 12 will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  89.              configuration.  If you want to keep your existing configuration,
  90.              click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG before continuing
  91.              the installation process.

  93.   11. Select Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver and click on OK.
  94.  
  95.   12. Windows will ask if you want to use the current SB16FM.DRV
  96.       or install the new SB16FM.DRV - Select NEW and continue on.
  97.  
  98.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.
  99.       Repeat the instructions in step 9.
  100.  
  101.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  102.       DO NOT RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  103.  
  104.   15. Select Creative Sound Blaster Wave and MIDI and click on OK.
  105.  
  106.   16. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster Port address, MIDI address, 
  107.       Interrupt, and DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and 
  108.       continue on.
  109.  
  110.   17. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  111.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  112.

  114. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  115. -----------------------------------------------------
  116.  
  117.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  118.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  119.    "Important Notes" section below.
  120.  
  121.    1. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  122.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  123.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  124.  
  125.    2. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  126.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  127.  
  128.             Creative Sound Blaster  Auxiliary Audio
  129.         Creative Sound Blaster  Wave and MIDI
  130.             MIDI Mapper
  131.             Timer
  132.         Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver
  133.             [MCI] CD Audio
  134.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  135.             [MCI] Sound
  136.  
  137.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  138.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  139.       manual for more details).
  140.  
  141.    3. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  142.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  143.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  144.       this:

  161.    4. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  162.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file or a
  163.       CD, be sure you have the following settings in the [mci] section of
  164.       SYSTEM.INI
  165.  
  166.               [mci]
  167.               WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  168.               Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  169.               CDAudio=mcicda.drv
  170.  
  171.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  172.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  173.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  174.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  177. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  178. --------------------------------------------------
  179.  
  180.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  181.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  182.    consider.
  183.  
  184.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  185.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  186.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  187.       line is removed.
  188.  
  189.    2. Delete the file SBPMIXER.CPL in the Windows SYSTEM directory.  It is no
  190.       longer being supported.  The new SBPMIXER.EXE is now used instead and is
  191.       loaded automatically when you install the Sound Blaster drivers.
  192.  
  193.    3. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest SB16WMIX.EXE,
  194.       MMJBOX.EXE, SB16FM.DRV, SB16AUX.DRV and SB16SND.DRV have been copied to your
  195.       hard disk.  Check the size and date of these files against the listing
  196.       in the section "Diskette Contents".  You can delete any older versions
  197.       that you find in your system.

  200. VI. Important notes
  201. -------------------

  206.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  207.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  208.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  209.  
  210.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  211.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  212.  
  213.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  214.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  215.       Mode.
  216.  
  217.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  218.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  219.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  220.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  221.       Drivers Disk.

  223.    4. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  224.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  225.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  226.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  227.  
  228.    5. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SB16FM.DRV, please use the
  229.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  230.  
  231.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  232.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  233.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  234.
